The Rail Park is open!

Philadelphia’s long-awaited Rail Park brings a creative green space to an industrial neighborhood, with spectacular views of the city skyline.

CG is honored to have been a part of the recent ribbon cutting, which marked the opening of the park’s first phase. When complete, the park will stretch three miles across Center City Philadelphia, connecting 10 diverse neighborhoods and making it twice the width and length of NYC’s High Line.

CG designed a spectacular 80′ corten steel “story” wall that captures the gritty history of the Callowhill Industrial District, highlighting Philadelphia’s reputation as the “Workshop of the World.” The 1910 US census lists 264 manufactured articles – Philadelphia manufactured 211 of them. The wall is laser cut with a map of the city, company logos, buildings and advertisements of manufacturers that operated in the area in its heyday.

An interpretive panel further outlines the importance of the two mighty railroads – Reading and Pennsylvania – that were headquartered there.

Congratulations to Studio Bryan Hanes and Urban Engineers on their inspired park design, and thanks to the Center City District for their amazing leadership in bringing the park to fruition.
