University of Iowa: one campus, one family
Founded in 1847, The University of Iowa is the oldest and second largest university in the state. Organized into 12 colleges and offering more than 200 areas of study, the University of Iowa ranks among the top 25 nationally in law, health care, and the fine arts.
CG developed a comprehensive signage and wayfinding master plan for the university in 2007. A second phase of the plan included the design of the entire system. Its implementation was interrupted by a devastating flood in 2008. The university slowly recovered and gradually began implementing parts of the system in connection with flood recovery efforts and new construction projects.
Today, CG has been re-engaged to support the university’s rebirth and the master plan goal to unify the 1,800 acre campus into one Hawkeye family. This effort includes academic, athletic, and health care districts on both sides of the Iowa River. A multi-modal system will revisit the needs of all visitors and users as they navigate the more than 1700-acre campus by car, foot, and bike as well as strengthening the association with the Iowa River, a dominant feature and landmark.
